Title: Policy and practice for the protection of groundwater
Author: Environment Agency
Document Type: Monograph
Abstract:
This Environment Agency document describes policies and practices for the protection of groundwater. In 1980 the European Commission introduced a Groundwater Directive (80/68/EEC) which was aimed largely at the control of discharges of specified substances to groundwater. Recognising the limitations of existing community wide regulations, the European Commission has published a proposal for an action programme for integrated groundwater protection and management (96/C 355/01). Regarding to UK the powers and duties of the Agency for the protection of groundwater are set out in the Water Resources Act 1991 and the Environment Act 1995.
