Abstract:
An experiment was carried out at ADAS Boxworth (Cambridgeshire, average annual rainfall 550mm) on a clay/clay loam soil (35% clay) in harvest season 2010. Cattle slurry (c.50m3/ha) was applied to field-scale (12 m x 48 m) hydrologically isolated plots using trailing hose equipment in August 2009 (to stubble). Each plot was drained with lateral drains at 24 m spacing and 90 cm depth, with gravel backfill to within 30 cm of the surface and secondary mole drains installed at right angles to the lateral drains at 50 cm depth and 2 m spacing. There were 3 replicates of each treatment arranged in a randomised block design. A replicate control plot, receiving no slurry, was also established on each of the slurry treatments. Direct nitrous oxide emissions were measured from the cattle slurry treatment and an untreated control for 12 months using the static chamber technique (5 chambers per plot). Ammonia emissions were measured for 7 days after application using the micro-meteorological mass balance technique. Drainage volumes were measured continuously from each plot and drainage water samples (collected on a flow-proportional basis) were analysed for nitrate-N. Where measured, this dataset contains: annual nitrous oxide emissions (kg N2O-N/ha/year), annual nitrous oxide emission factors (% of total nitrogen applied), year experiment started, crop type, previous crop type, soil texture, soil clay content, soil dry bulk density, soil organic carbon content, soil pH, total rainfall during the experimental period, nitrogen source, experimental treatments, application timing, application method, block number, total nitrogen applied, readily available nitrogen (i.e. if present, the sum of ammonium-N, nitrate-N and uric acid-N) applied, cumulative ammonia emissions, cumulative nitrate leaching loss, crop yield, crop total nitrogen offtake, grain nitrogen offtake, manure dry matter, manure pH, manure organic carbon, manure ammonium-N applied, manure nitrate-N applied, manure uric acid-N applied and time to incorporation. ND = not determined. NA = not applicable. 'Rainfall during the experimental period' = cumulative rainfall from the first day of manure application to the last day of N2O sampling. The soil organic carbon content and soil pH were measured in 2007. The N2O emission factors are calculated using annual cumulative N2O values to 15 decimal places, however the annual cumulative N2O and emission factor values have been reported elsewhere to 2 decimal places.
