Abstract:
Nitrous oxide emissions (2 closed static chambers/plot) were monitored for about 12 months, following the spring application, by hand, of various nitrogen fertilisers (ammonium nitrate, urea, urea+urease inhibitor nBTPT [trade name Agrotain®], urea ammonium nitrate solution and urea ammonium nitrate solution+urease inhibitor nBTPT [trade name Agrotain®]) and from an untreated control. Three fertiliser applications were made in order to achieve the target, commercial rate of 220 kg N/ha. There were 3 replicate plots (3.5 x 24 m) of each treatment arranged in a randomised block design. The plots were established on a winter wheat crop sown the previous autumn, on a silty clay loam soil in East Anglia, UK. Where measured, this dataset contains: annual nitrous oxide emissions (kg N2O-N/ha/year), annual nitrous oxide emission factors (% of total nitrogen applied), year experiment started, site location, crop type, previous crop type, soil texture, soil clay content, soil dry bulk density, soil organic carbon content, soil pH, total rainfall during the experimental period, nitrogen source, experimental treatments, application timing, application method, block number, total nitrogen applied, readily available nitrogen (i.e. if present, ammonium-N, nitrate-N & uric acid-N) applied, cumulative ammonia emission, cumulative nitrate leaching loss, crop yield, crop total nitrogen offtake & crop grain nitrogen offtake. ND = not determined. NA = not applicable. nBTPT = N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide. The N2O emission factors & annual cumulative N2O values have been extrapolated to a 365 day measurement period. 'Rainfall during the experimental period' = cumulative rainfall from the first day of fertiliser application to the last day of N2O sampling. The N2O emission factors are calculated using annual cumulative N2O values to 15 decimal places, however the annual cumulative N2O and emission factor values have been reported elsewhere to 2 decimal places. Note: in the paper reporting these results (Smith K A, Dobbie K E, Thorman R, Watson C J, Chadwick D R, Yamulki S and Ball B C 2012 The effect of N fertilizer forms on nitrous oxide emissions from UK arable land and grassland Nutr. Cycl. Agroecosyst. 93 127–49) the annual cumulative N2O emissions (and hence Emission factors) have been calculated differently to those reported here.
