Abstract:
On a commercial arable farm near Ollerton, central England (sandy loam topsoil texture), direct nitrous oxide (N2O) and ammonia (NH3) emissions were measured from replicated (x3) plots (24 x 13 m), following spring applications of manufactured nitrogen (N) fertilisers to winter wheat. A control treatment was included where no N fertiliser was applied. Ammonium nitrate (AN) fertiliser (34.5% N) or urea fertiliser (46% N) were applied at a rate of 160 kg N/ha, in three split applications (mid-March, late-March and late-April). In separate treatments, a commercially available nitrification inhibitor was tested; dicyandiamide (DCD) was sprayed at a rate of 10 kg/ha (6.5 kg N/ha) onto the AN and urea plots immediately after N fertiliser application. The N supplied by the DCD was accounted for in the 160 kg N/ha application. Additionally, AN and urea fertiliser was also applied in five equal splits in mid-March, late-March, mid-April, late-April and early-May i.e. 'little and often'. Following N fertiliser application, measurements of direct N2O-N were made over c.12 months, using 5 static chambers (0.8 m2 total surface area) per plot and analysed by gas chromatography. Ammonia-N emissions were measured for c.3 weeks after each split N fertiliser application, using a wind tunnel technique (one per plot). Nitrate leaching losses were measured using porous ceramic cups (6 per plot) installed to a depth of 90 cm during the period of over-winter drainage (Webster et al., 1993) with samples collected every 50 mm of drainage or every 2 weeks whichever occurred sooner. Drainage volumes were estimated using IRRIGUIDE (Bailey and Spackman, 1986) and were combined with NO3 concentrations to quantify the amounts of NO3-N leached. Grain yields and total N offtakes were measured following harvest in August 2010. Where measured, this dataset contains: annual nitrous oxide emissions (kg N2O-N/ha/year), annual nitrous oxide emission factors (% of total nitrogen applied), year experiment started, site location, crop type, previous crop type, soil texture, soil clay content, soil dry bulk density, soil organic carbon content, soil pH, total rainfall during the experimental period, nitrogen source, experimental treatments, application timing, application method, block number, total nitrogen applied, readily available nitrogen (i.e. if present, ammonium-N, nitrate-N and uric acid-N) applied, cumulative ammonia emission, cumulative nitrate leaching loss, crop yield, crop total nitrogen offtake & crop grain nitrogen offtake. ND = not determined. NA = not applicable. 'Rainfall during the experimental period' = cumulative rainfall from the first day of fertiliser application to the last day of N2O sampling. The N2O emission factors are calculated using annual cumulative N2O values to 15 decimal places, however the annual cumulative N2O and emission factor values have been reported to 2 decimal places.
