The North West Norfolk catchment stretches northwards from Denver Sluice in Downham Market to King’s Lynn, Hunstanton and Brancaster. The North West Norfolk catchment is predominantly rural with a population of 109,000. The countryside is mainly used for arable farming and is gently undulating, about a quarter of it is classified as ‘high quality’ land and is an important national and local resource. The catchment supports a balanced ecosystem and contains sites of exceptional environmental value. The River Great Ouse, flanked by the Relief Channel, flows from the south to The Wash in the north. The Smeeth Lode drains the low-lying fenland area from Emneth to Terrington St Clements, characterised by high value agricultural land and manmade drainage systems pumped into the River Great Ouse. From the east the rivers Heacham, Ingol, Babingley and Nar flow from springs in the chalk uplands towards King’s Lynn and the Wash. (EA)
