Abstract:
This short Environment Agency booklet aims to analyse the beach monitoring. In order to understand the developments and processes acting on the coastline between Mablethorpe and Skegness, information in the form of beach surveys must be gathered and analysed. For soft engineering defences such as beach nourishment, the measuring of profiles is essential and information has to be collected regularly and stored effectively to enable meaningful analysis. Topographic and hydrographic surveys o f the coastline are undertaken at 3 monthly intervals. The main objectives being: to define the situation just before and just after nourishment and to confirm that completed beach nourishment profiles are within the design tolerance; to provide data to design the required nourishment volume during construction o f the scheme; to enable the identification of underlying trends in beach development; to study the behaviour of the coastline after nourishment and the effect of the nourishment on adjacent areas; in particular, the area south of Skegness (downdrift) which is of importance for environmental (Gibraltar Point) and navigational (Skegness Banks) reasons.
