Title: The quality of rivers in England and Wales (1990 to 1995)
Author: Environment Agency
Document Type: Monograph
Abstract:
The purpose of this report is to provide an assessment of the state of our rivers, to describe the pressures on rivers, and to explain recent changes in the quality of rivers. This assessment must be based on information that is accurate and consistent. The Environment Agency developed this through the scheme known as the General Quality Assessment (GQA). The GQA consists of a number of parallel assessments. The first used was the Chemical GQA. This describes the quality of rivers in terms of the measurements which detect the most common types of pollution - discharges of organic wastes from sewage treatment works, from agriculture and from industry. The Biological GQA is a measure of quality based on the monitoring of the small animals which live on the bed of the river. Biological monitoring can provide information about types of pollution that would be missed by chemical monitoring.
