Abstract:
Pig slurry was applied by trailing shoe and surface broadcasting at five rates, viz: 20, 35, 50, 65 and 80 m3/ha, using a purpose built small-plot applicator to grassland, on a loamy sand soil in autumn 2005. There were 3 replicate plots (5 x 12m) of each application treatment arranged in a randomised block design. Direct nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions were measured from the 35m3/ha slurry rate for about 12 months after application from both application techniques and an untreated control, using the static chamber technique (five chambers per plot). Nitrous oxide samples were analysed using gas chromatography. This dataset is of daily nitrous oxide flux (g N2O-N/ha/d) measurements. If the data file is downloaded/opened in excel, dates may appear as dd-mm-yy instead of the standard yy-mm-dd. For practical reasons the slurry was applied to each block on successive days. As a result the N2O sampling schedule did not require all blocks to be sampled on the same day. NA = not applicable; ND = not determined.
