Abstract:
Prior to the reclamation that commenced in the early 13th Century, high tides reached inland through the river system to influence the majority of the levels and moors in Somerset. The work undertaken over the centuries, including the construction of sea defences, embanking of the tidal rivers, outfalls through these banks and tidal exclusion structures on the rivers, has left only the Parrett and its tributaries open to the tide. Mean high spring tides can reach to Oath Lock [S49] on the Parrett, some 28 km inland, with exceptionally high tides reaching the redundant Langport Lock a further 3.5 km upstream. On the River Tone, spring tides reach Hook Bridge [S89], some 26 km inland. This document is the appendix volume of the review of flood defence practices on the Somerset leves and Moors.
