The River Frome and Mill Stream

The FBA owns fishing rights to some 4km of the River Frome and most of the Mill Stream in the village of East Stoke. This enables the FBA to make access to these rivers available to visiting scientists and researchers, students and school groups for a wide range of courses and activities.

Teaching on the River Frome

The southernmost English chalk stream, the River Frome is ideal for field visits, school trips, student projects and research. Flowing through 35km, the River Frome (pronounced ‘Froom’) at the FBA River Laboratory is one of the most beautiful rivers in the County. Clean gravels, excellent water quality, and a myriad range of water life including Kingfishers, Otters, Water Voles, Salmon and countless mayflies and other invertebrates make the River Frome a joy to visit and study.

Mill Stream

The Millstream is a small cousin of the Frome, splitting off from the River at the FBA owned East Stoke Fen and rejoining the main river several kilometres downstream. Being smaller than the Frome, the Millstream is ideal for easy access and study by school groups of all ages and is complemented by easy access to the FBA buildings and facilities. The Millstream is also used for scientific study by researchers based at the Lab.
