Abstract:
An experiment was carried out at ADAS Boxworth (Cambridgeshire, average annual rainfall 550mm) on a clay/clay loam soil (35% clay) in harvest season 2010. Cattle slurry (c.50m3/ha) was applied to field-scale (12 m x 48 m) hydrologically isolated plots using trailing hose equipment in August 2009 (to stubble). Each plot was drained with lateral drains at 24 m spacing and 90 cm depth, with gravel backfill to within 30 cm of the surface and secondary mole drains installed at right angles to the lateral drains at 50 cm depth and 2 m spacing. There were 3 replicates of each treatment arranged in a randomised block design. A replicate control plot, receiving no slurry, was also established on each of the slurry treatments. This dataset is of soil mineral nitrogen (SMN) values measured to 0-30 cm depth before experimental treatments were applied in August 2009.
