Abstract:
An experiment was carried out at ADAS Boxworth (Cambridgeshire, average annual rainfall 550mm) on a clay/clay loam soil (35% clay) in harvest season 2011. Cattle slurry (c.55m3/ha) was applied to field-scale (12 m x 48 m) hydrologically isolated plots using trailing hose equipment at three different timings in August 2010 (to stubble), September 2010 (post emergence of winter oilseed rape) and February 2011 (to a growing winter oilseed rape crop). Each plot was drained with lateral drains at 24 m spacing and 90 cm depth, with gravel backfill to within 30 cm of the surface and secondary mole drains installed at right angles to the lateral drains at 50 cm depth and 2 m spacing. There were 3 replicates of each treatment arranged in a randomised block design. At each application timing a replicate control plot, receiving no slurry, was also established on each of the slurry treatments. This dataset contains measurements of soil moisture as soil water-filled pore space (%) taken from all treatments on the same days as nitrous oxide emissions measurements were made. The first measurement is a 'background' measurement, which was measured in the morning before any treatments were applied in the afternoon. For each treatment, the water-filled pore space value shown is the mean of three values measured from each block. ND = not determined. If the data file is downloaded/opened in excel, dates may appear as dd-mm-yy instead of the standard yy-mm-dd.
