Abstract:
An experiment was carried out at Faringdon (Oxfordshire, average annual rainfall 650 mm) on a heavy clay soil (54% clay) in harvest season 2011. Cattle slurry (c.50m3/ha) was applied to field-scale (40 m x 48 m) hydrologically isolated plots using trailing hose equipment in September 2010 (to stubble and grass), March and April 2011 (to a growing winter wheat crop) and March and July 2011 (to grass). Each plot was drained with pipe drains at 48 m spacing and 90 cm depth, supplemented by permeable fill to within 30 cm of the surface and secondary mole drains installed at right angles to the lateral drains at 50 cm depth and 2 m spacing. There were 3 replicates of each treatment arranged in a randomised block design. At each application timing a replicate control plot, receiving no slurry, was also established on each of the slurry treatments. This dataset contains daily rainfall (mm) and daily mean air temperature (degree Celsius) measured from either the closest meteorological station to the experimental site or from instruments located at the experimental site. If the data file is downloaded/opened in excel, dates may appear as dd-mm-yy instead of the standard yy-mm-dd.
