Abstract:
This Environment Agency booklet aims to describe the history of flooding of one of the Cornwall's best know tourist centres. Bude sets in the valley of the River Neet in the north-east of the county. A small, traditional resort, Bude boasts Summerleaze Beach at the mouth of the Neet and the Bude Canal which flows alongside the river. Bude's economy is based on agriculture and tourism. It is estimated that 50 per cent of employment in Bude provides services to visitors. Notable flood events have been recorded at Bude and Helebridge in 1846, 1887, 1900, 1903, 1948, 1950, 1969, 1979, and most recently 12 June 1993. A common feature of many of these events is that they occurred after a prolonged period of rain, when the catchment was saturated. Following the floods of 1948 and 1950 the former Cornwall River Board set to work on
building a flood defence scheme for the town.
