Abstract:
The overall objective of the study was to Investigate the extent of pollution of the water environment from contaminated land sites, in each of the ten NRA Regions. As part of this objective the more problematic sites in each of the Regions have been identified and details of the contaminative use, the nature of the contaminants, the development status of the sites, the water bodies affected and of remedial actions, both undertaken and proposed, have been given. In the course of this study 139 sites were identified as causing or having potential to cause pollution of the water environment. This however, is only a selection from the total number of such sites across England and Wales. It was reiterated in many Regions that the sites put forward for inclusion in this study were merely a sample and representative of a much larger problem. In the earlier study undertaken by Severn Trent some 186 contaminated land sites were identified.
